Welcome! Belcantosong celebrates the joy of singing and the beauty of the human voice in flight. We are an Australia-based group of opera, concert and musical theatre fans and performers. We welcome artists and devotees from all over the globe to a meeting place for ideas and the latest information and conversation about music and theatre We are based in Sydney, Australia and have outgrown our Facebook page “Bel Canto” and need a permanent home! Designer Blair Parkinson, Singer and voice teacher Victoria Watson and opera enthusiast Deen Hamaker together bring you a meeting place – a cybercafé for talking about opera, singing, theatre, music, ideas or anything else that excites you in the world of music and theatre. Belcantosong Australia also celebrates great singing by staging concerts, promoting artists and advocating for musicians and theatre practitioners in Australia and world-wide to encourage and develop a love and understanding for opera and acoustic classical singing in all its forms and variables. Our beginnings on Facebook... Our Facebook page “Bel Canto” started up in 2011 and has grown to over 5,000 likes and and has grown in 2016 to over 9000 “likes” and sometimes as many as 200 new likes a week! It goes way beyond just a social media meeting place and has brought people together face to face to become lifelong friends. It’s a place to meet the artists admired on the stages of the world and for artists to share their triumphs and their challenges. As Aussies, we celebrate the artists making careers and studying here in Australia and making waves overseas too - letting our expats know what is happening back in Oz and keeping the Aussie community up to date with what artists are doing all around the world. We hope to inform, educate, inspire and have fun!
“Bel Canto” page brings together artists and opera lovers both online and in the flesh! Victoria is pictured here at a supper held at the Bennelong Restaurant Sydney Opera House for opera singers from the cast of Lucia di Lammermoor in 2012 including Emma Matthews, Giorgio Caoduro (Italy) James Valenti (USA) and Teresa La Rocca. Opera lover Deen Hamaker co-admins the page on Facebook.

A lifetime vocation for fine singing and theatre. The human voice in flight and the music of the great composers combined are the most thrilling experiences of my life. I love to take a personal journey with each and every student I work with, whatever age (my eldest is 82) to discover their voice and fulfil its potential to express art and emotion and tell the stories of humanity. I have the best job in the world! I am a fierce advocate for the rights of artists, particularly singers, borne of an admiration for the dedication and risks required to enter and stay in the profession. Opera and music theatre fascinate me, and I research and teach every aspect of the history and performance of these arts.
Victoria is pictured above with a portrait by Adelaide based painter Mishka Ammann . She sang for over 10 years with the Victoria State opera in Melbourne as a principal and ensemble artist. The painting is based on a costume shot by Lucas de Jong from Verdi’s Don Carlo- the opera that opened the State theatre in Melbourne in 1985. The costume was designed by Kristian Fredriksen.
